Sustainable Energy

The sustainable energy industry includes a broad range of renewable energy and energy efficient products and services. Due to environmental concerns and the recent rise in oil prices, the market for these products and services is growing.

The Florida Solar Energy Center of the University of Central Florida, along with Alternate Energy Technologies and Thermal Conversion Technologies of Gainesville were key elements to the addition of the Corridor’s sustainable energy sector. Additionally, Alachua County is known for having one of the largest percentages of Energy Star®, energy-efficient new homes, of all the counties in the nation.

Currently, renewable energy constitutes less than 3 percent of Florida’s electric power production. However, with recent tax credits, this market has definite growth potential.

As sustainable energy is a new sector of the Florida High Tech Corridor, the Council is actively researching the sector’s revenue, employment and total company numbers.
