USF Spin-Off Ships Complete Microfabrication Line
St. Petersburg-based Intelligent Micro-Patterning LLC, one of the first private independent business spin-offs created through research on microeletromechanical systems (MEMS) at USF’s Center for Ocean Technology, has announced the shipment of a complete microfabrication line to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The company has provided the equipment and the expertise to establish a microfluidics fabrication line at the medical school. A microfluidics fabrication line is a small device able to produce features as small as five microns (for reference, a human hair is 100 microns), which is used for chemical analysis and biological experimentation.

The heart of the processing line is Intelligent Micro Patterning’s signature product, the SF-100 Maskless Exposure System, which incorporates micro-optical techniques to project master images directly onto diverse substrate materials. The University of North Carolina School of Medicine will use the device for many research projects including cellular manipulation and bioartificial pancreas development.

Efforts to Attract Video Game Giant Advance
Electronic Arts (EA), the nation’s largest video game maker, is looking at the Metro Orlando area and Vancouver to broaden its operations. The company, which produces games like Madden NFL, currently employs 275 people at a Maitland subsidiary but is looking to expand operations, which may create 775 more jobs.

As part of an incentive package to bring the video game giant to Central Florida, House and Senate budget negotiators declared that at least $4.2 million will be available to launch a specialized program at the University of Central Florida to train prospective employees of EA. The proposed Florida Interactive Academy would house a training program with degrees in areas such as computer science and digital film.

Corridor Cities Among Top 100 Places to Live
Relocate-America.com named several Corridor cities as one of 2004’s Top 100 Places to live. Venice, Florida topped the list as number one. Other Corridor cities in the Top 100 include: Celebration, Deltona, Melbourne and Tampa.

Cities are nominated by current or past residents or other individuals familiar with the community’s benefits. The nominated towns are evaluated on education, crime, employment and housing data of the past year. The final accepted nominations are compared based on the number of votes and inquiries that each city received over the previous year, and the Top 100 is selected. Inclusion in the Top 100 is beneficial to cities as the list is used as a relocation resource.

USF Lends Shark Expert to the Discovery Channel
University of South Florida (USF) biology Ph.D. student Dan Huber recently traveled to New Zealand to appear on the Discovery Channel’s “Animal Face-off” as an expert on shark bite force. The show put the bite force of a shark up against that of a crocodile and a hippopotamus.

Dan Huber, a Long Island, N.Y. native and Duke University graduate, came to USF to work with biology department shark expert Phillip Motta and the Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for Shark Research in Sarasota. Huber’s primary research is the biomechanics of shark feeding, in particular, the generation of bite force by the cranial muscles. To investigate this, he designs mechanical models of prey for sharks utilizing three different shark feeding mechanisms: suction, crushing and gouging.
