Soldiers to get Upgrade on Handheld Computers Thanks to Tampa Company
Handheld computers used by the U.S. military are going to get an upgrade thanks to technology being developed by a Tampa-based
company. Sypris Electronics, a subsidiary of Sypris Solutions, has won a $6.2 million contract to design an encryption
device known as the Secure Data Transfer Device 2000 System. This new product is only one of a variety of devices designed
by Sypris for encrypting data transmissions in battle environments. For more information visit

Corridor Educators to Learn About Optics & Photonics Industry
For the first time, Corridor K-12 educators will participate in a program that
will give them an in-depth understanding of the region’s fast-growing optics and
photonics cluster. Called Tech Camp, the program will focus on the science
behind optics and photonics and will provide participants with take-home lab
activities for integration into the classroom. This free, one-day Camp will be
held on April 24 at the facilities of Schwartz Electro-Optics and is open to
K-12 educators from across the Corridor region but is limited to 30
participants. For more information contact Vicki Morelli at
vemorelli@cfl.rr.com.
Companies in Corridor Research Program to get Boost from Florida MEP
Thanks to an agreement between the FHTCC and the Florida Manufacturing Extension Partnership (Florida
MEP), companies
participating in the Corridor’s matching grant research program will now be able to more effectively negotiate assistance with the
Florida MEP to transfer and commercialize that research. The Florida MEP will also help participating companies in a variety of
other ways including helping them apply for national Small Business Innovation Research
(SBIR) and Small Business Technology
Transfer Outreach (STTR) grants. The Florida MEP is part of a network of more than 70 not-for-profit centers nationwide that
provide small and medium-sized businesses with services aimed at improving their business. For information on the Corridor’s
research program visit

National High School Robotics Competition Coming to Orlando
This month high school students from across North America and Puerto Rico will descend on
Orlando for a three-day robotics competition that tests the limits of their math, science and technology abilities. One of 23
regional competitions happening across the country, the Central Florida FIRST Robotics Regional will include more than 1,800
students on 41 teams that will use robots to acquire and stack plastic storage
containers in a “scoring zone.” Students participating in the event also can apply for more than 90 merit-based
scholarship opportunities amounting to more than $2.4 million. The event will take place on March 20-22 and is being sponsored
by the FHTCC, Innovation First, Metro Orlando EDC, Motorola, NASA/Kennedy Space Center, Siemens Inc., United Space Alliance,
and Walt Disney World. For more information on the program visit

High Tech Companies and Job Seekers to be United Online
People looking for high tech jobs and Corridor companies looking to hire will soon be united in an online tool designed to meet
the region’s high tech workforce needs. The site, which will be launched from
www.floridahightech.com, will allow employers to access information
on their industry’s labor outlook and post current job openings. Potential employees will also be able to use the site to find the
projected growth and wages in high tech industries; information on the education and job experience needed for specific
occupations; and details on current job listings. Building off a project conducted last year that looked at all industries across
the 21-county Corridor, this new tool will be available in early-April.
World’s Largest Laboratory Conference Almost Here

Event organizers, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, have also provided
a $25,000 grant to the Orlando Science Center (OSC) for development of a cutting-edge physics laboratory open to local middle and
high school students and teachers. For more information on the conference visit

Two Corridor Students Selected as Finalists in National Science Competition
Forty of tomorrow’s top scientists and engineers have been selected as finalists in the Intel Science Talent Challenge, and two of
these high school seniors are from the Corridor. Anupama Kotha from C. Leon King High School in Tampa and Anant Ramesh Patel from
Astronaut High School in Titusville will travel to Washington D.C. to compete for $530,000 in college scholarships. Students that
participate in the competition submit an original research project, which is then judged by a national panel of professional
scientists. Past finalists have gone on to win some of the world’s most coveted science and math awards including five Nobel
Prizes, three National Medals of Science and two Fields Medals. For more information visit

Coming Soon …
The Florida High Tech Corridor’s award-winning Web site is getting a facelift. The changes being made to the site will
help promote greater ease of use through the development of four distinct sections – a Corridor overview, information on
the region’s high tech sectors, tools for job seekers, and a comprehensive newsroom. The changes are scheduled to be
completed by end of March.
