USF Researchers Use Model Simulations to
Predict Storm Surge
This month marks the beginning of hurricane season, and researchers
at the University of South Florida’s (USF) College of Marine Science
have examined the possible storm surge impacts in the Tampa Bay
area. Physical oceanographer Robert Weisberg and associate Lianyuan
Zheng have used data from the 2004 hurricane season to run model
simulations taking into account direction, speed, storm intensity
and location of landfall to determine surge potential of possible
storms.
Weisberg predicts that the Tampa Bay region will be vulnerable to
storm surge during the 2005 hurricane season.

UF Students Develop Smaller Heart Pump
Engineering students at the University of Florida (UF) have used a
new pumping technology to create a heart pumping device smaller than
the current ventricular assist devices. Until now, these devices
were too large for many people, and the small size of this
development could make it the first ventricular assist device to be
used in children.
This new technology offers hope for future patients waiting for
donor hearts, because it is not only smaller, but more efficient.
The device was designed through the College of Engineering’s
Integrated Process and Product Design (IPPD) Program, a government
and corporate sponsored research education program.

Study Shows That Research Dollars Increase
Economic Activity
The Florida Board of Governors recently released a study showing
that every additional dollar spent on research at Florida
universities results in $11 of increased economic activity.
The study, which reiterated the importance of research funding in
the state, was conducted by the Leadership Board for Applied
Research and Public Service. In addition, the study also indicated
that in the next 30 years research will generate $218 million in

Oragenics Develops Manufacturing Process for
Novel Antibiotic
The Alachua-based biotechnology company, Oragenics, Inc.,
has discovered a way to manufacture the novel peptide antibiotic
Mutacin 1140 in quantities large enough to conduct preclinical
studies. Mucatin 1140 has been shown to kill the bacteria which
cause strep throat, pneumonia, and gastric ulcers.
Oragenics will conduct studies on the antibiotic during the next
15 to 18 months to assist in the filing of an Investigational New
Drug application.

Tech Transfer Confab Is Success for Second
Year
More than 350 entrepreneurs, corporate executives and
government officials attended the Second Annual Florida Tech
Transfer Conference held in Orlando this May. The two-day event,
sponsored by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council and Florida
Trend, featured the most recent technological innovations from
13 of Florida’s universities, including the University of Central
Florida, the University of South Florida, the University of Florida
and the Florida Institute of Technology.
Two innovations were unveiled at the event, including the
Bio-glove and a navigation system for robot vehicles. The Bio-glove,
developed by six design engineering students from Florida Atlantic
University, fits like a normal glove and restores sensory perception
in the human hand that may have been lost from accident or disease.
The robot navigation system, designed by a team led by Emmanual
Collins, Ph.D., professor of engineering at Florida A&M University,
allows an unmanned vehicle to navigate cluttered environments, such
as dense forests or rocky caves at high speeds.
