Conference Bridges University Research and Business
The first ever Florida Tech Transfer Conference, hosted by the Florida Research Consortium and the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, and co-sponsored by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council and Florida Trend's Research Florida, brought researchers from 12 universities together to showcase 100 new technology innovations in homeland security, cancer treatment, biotechnology and nanotechnology research, and gene therapy to more than 400 business technology executives and entrepreneurs.

Thrilled with the event's success, Michelle Bauer, executive director of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum said, "We are hopeful that a few years down the road we can point to the next blockbuster drug or technology as a success story begun at the Florida Tech Transfer Conference."

Kudos to everyone who had a hand in the event's success! For additional information, contact Jack Sullivan, president & CEO of the Florida Research Consortium at jsullivan@nettally.com, or Michelle Bauer at mbauer@tbtf.org.

Tampa Bay's Young and the Restless Calls for Revival!
Along with 10 regional economic organizations, the Florida High Tech Corridor Council helped fund a study titled "The Young and the Restless: How Tampa Bay Competes for Talent." This 65-page study was conducted by CreativeTampaBay Inc. and focused on comparing the young professionals of Tampa Bay to other metro areas.

To understand the factors that motivate the location decisions of young adults, CreativeTampaBay completed a series of interviews and focus groups of 25-34 year-olds, who had moved recently from one metropolitan area to another. These focus groups were conducted in Tampa Bay as well as four other selected cities around the nation. The organization found that although Tampa Bay received a low ranking, the results will spark awareness and create a great opportunity for the metropolitan area of Tampa Bay to be improved. In fact, CreativeTampaBay has already started making plans for reviving downtown St. Petersburg into an environment that will attract young adults, as well as a "Downtown Vision Plan" for the city of Tampa. Additionally, the Tampa Chamber has just launched a new leadership program for young professionals called "Emerge Tampa."

Manatee Community College IT Forum a Success!
Manatee Community College Center for Innovation and Technology recently hosted a comprehensive IT Forum which brought IT professionals from Microsoft, Thompson-Course Technology and several colleges together to discuss the latest trends in IT security information, curriculum, training needs and lab configuration projections. The forum also offered breakout sessions highlighting information such as end-user training, security forensic data recovery and data discovery.

"The Forum was a success, as it allowed IT faculty from several institutions to share ideas and bring government, business, and industry together to formulate curriculum to prepare students for industry recognized programs such as our Information Technology Security Certificate Program (ITSEC)," said Idelia Phillips, director of occupational and technical education at Manatee Community College.

UCF Announces Creation of College of Optics and Photonics
The University of Central Florida has announced that its School of Optics will be promoted to the College of Optics and Photonics, the first optics program in the country to become its own college within a university. The college will house the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL) and also the Florida Photonics Center for Excellence (FPCE).

This change will allow for the Optics program to be a free-standing, degree-granting college headed by a dean rather than just a school embedded inside of another college headed by a director. UCF is hopeful that this will also promote national recognition for the university and help to recruit esteemed faculty and students.

For additional information, visit www.creol.ucf.edu or contact Tom Evelyn at 407-823-5988.

USF Expands To Four Corners
Beginning this fall, the University of South Florida (USF) will expand into Davenport – a rapidly growing Central Florida area known as Four Corners, which includes Orange, Osceola, Lake and Polk counties. USF will offer a master's degree program in educational leadership.

Plans are also in the works to expand USF to Polk Parkway by building a major technology campus near Ridgeview, which is estimated to open within the next 10 years.

Florida Tech Partners with Brevard Students for GETSMART
Florida Tech will partner with Stone Middle School to host GETSMART, an educational program designed to get Brevard County middle school students interested in the many areas of engineering. GETSMART stands for Gateway to Engineering, Technology, Science and Math Resources for Tomorrow.

During the week of June 14, up to 48 Brevard County middle school students will get the chance to attend "hands-on" workshops focusing on aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, and ocean engineering, and participate in a workshop presented by NASA. This program, as well as a five-week program for Brevard County teachers, is made possible by a grant from the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.

DTCC Chooses Tampa for New Operations Center
After looking at 25 cities, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has chosen Tampa to build its new operations center. This location of the New York financial services organization will provide jobs for 500 high tech workers by 2007 at an average annual salary more than $72,000, which is more than double Florida's average salary.

DTCC was offered about $1 million in incentives from the city and county as well as $500,000 that it qualified for under Florida's incentive programs for large businesses paying above-average salaries. The company plans on spending about $35 million to establish its new 176,000-square-foot facility.

Theme Park Utilizes Cutting Edge Techniques in Attraction
Following ten years of research and development, Universal Studios Orlando recently opened one of the most technologically advanced attractions in history, The Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride. The state-of-the-art roller coaster proves to be the world's first psychological thrill ride, tapping into riders' fears by assaulting their senses through utilization of space-age robotics combined with techniques gleaned from the Mars robotic range vehicles, sophisticated motion picture technology, and audio and special effects engineering.

It is the first attraction that employs the same technology used in futuristic magnetic levitation trains including an electro-magnetic propulsion launch system with linear induction motor ride tracks designed to propel the ride vehicles through 2,200 feet of curves, drops, and sweeping turns, containing seven near zero gravity moments.
