Big News for Biotech at USF
University of South Florida
(USF)
president Judy Genshaft recently unveiled plans for a 100,000 square-foot biotechnology and life sciences research center that
will anchor an 87-acre research park on USF's Tampa campus. The university expects to break ground on the project this fall,
anticipating that by partnering its applied research with private business expertise to create spin-off companies, these
companies will remain in the area and provide the economic advantage of forming clusters.
The proposed interdisciplinary research
facility will be of special interest to small area businesses and entrepreneurs in the biotech field, including makers of
plastic, single-use medical equipment, specialized valves and advanced pharmaceuticals. Benefits of the facility include
co-location, access to laboratories and high tech equipment; low-cost USF graduate student labor; and the expertise of USF's
medical, engineering and biology faculties.

US Army Places $1.3 Million Order with Melbourne-Based Symetrics
With the help of Symetrics, US Army pilots will be able to share information - such as targets, weapons status or fuel status -
between aircraft and ground stations. Symetrics Industries has begun work on a delivery order to manufacture 24 Improved Data
Modems (IDM-302: MD-1295/A) to meet these important needs of the US Army. The modems will be used in the aviation community on
such platforms as the AH-64D Longbow Apache and OH-58D Kiowa helicopter programs.
The IDM-302 is a sophisticated airborne data modem that uses embedded computers to allow data to be passed from
aircraft-to-aircraft or to-and-from ground vehicles or stations and/or maritime vessels, without adding radios or modifying the
aircraft's operational flight program. For additional information on Symetrics or its products, visit http://www.symetrics.com.

New Fund Sees Promise in the Young
A new venture capital fund - established by Inflexion to invest solely in barely hatched companies - has opened its first
office in Gainesville, with plans to establish offices in Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville in the coming months. The fund hopes
to invest in 15 emerging companies in the next three to four years.
Inflexion is led by four partners with Silicon Valley experience and an eye for research coming out of the university
system. They chose Florida upon realizing there has been a major shift at the university level to assist the technology
transfer process. With concerted efforts underway to partner university-based researchers and companies with industry talents
and money based in the state, the investment profit and the economic impact are enjoyed in Florida - as well as the quality of
life. For more information, visit

Powerful University Partnership Generates High Tech Success Story
When Orlando-based Rini Technologies, Inc. first started its research partnership with the University of Central Florida
(UCF),
the start-up company's primary focus was on cooling systems for military lasers. From this technology, another device evolved - a
Portable Soldier Cooling System. This system, designed to keep warriors cooler under flak jackets and chemical-protection suits,
recently received a $70,000 U.S. Army contract.
Though still in its early phases, the project - a result of a collaborative effort between UCF and Rini - has been widely
successful. The Army is considering using the technology in its 2006-2007 Objective Force Warrior Program. The company has also
been invited to submit a Phase II proposal to Natick Soldier Center and is currently trying to obtain funding for further
development from the U.S. Navy. For more information, visit
