A New Look for USF
After months of research and review, the University of South Florida (USF) has a
new look. More than 300 faculty, staff, alumni and students participated in
focus groups to provide their suggestions and input. The logo goes hand in hand
with a new branding plan to focus on the strategic priorities of the university:
excellence in student enrichment and discovery, excellence in research,
excellence in addressing community needs and excellence in health and medical
services, research and quality of life.
The logo uses a slightly darker green and shifts from the previous yellow to a more gold hue. The bold USF lettering has a strong look, and the classic design style is more versatile for the variety of needs and uses within the university. The logo replacements will be phased in during the summer and fall semester. For additional information, or to view the new logo, visit isis2.admin.usf.edu.
Breakthrough Tendon Repair System Earns FDA Approval
Orlando-based Ortheon Medical has received FDA clearance
Orlando-based Ortheon Medical has received FDA clearance for sales and marketing
of its breakthrough tendon repair system, Teno FixTM. Utilizing a patented
technology, Teno Fix marks the first use of a surgical anchor system in soft
tissue repair and could forever change the way orthopedic and plastic
reconstructive surgeons repair torn and damaged tendons. The system has the
potential to provide quicker recovery time and to reduce the need for repeat
surgeries associated with standard suturing techniques. With the aid of a
matching research grant from the Florida High Tech Corridor, additional uses for
this new tendon repair system are being analyzed at the University of Central
Florida. For more information, visit www.ortheon.com.
UCF Optics Pioneer Wins R.W. Wood Prize
University of Central Florida (UCF)
professor George Stegeman has been awarded the Optical Society of America's (OSA's)
R.W. Wood Prize for his achievements in optics research. Stegeman pioneered
non-linear integrated optics through innovative experiments and leadership in
the field at UCF's School of Optics/CREOL. Through his research, Stegeman
created all-optical switching - a super-fast system for manipulating huge
amounts of information. The technology, which is being developed for
commercial applications and should be on the market in as early as five
years, will speed up computers and other systems that must process large
amounts of information quickly.
OSA's R.W. Wood Prize, which recognizes the outstanding discovery, scientific or technical achievement or invention in the field of optics, consists of a medal, a certificate and $1,500 endowed by the Xerox Corp. For more information, visit
www.news.ucf.edu.
