Melbourne Simulation Company Awarded $5.6M Navy Contract

 More realistic and efficient training systems for naval aircraft will now be partially provided by a Melbourne company. Awarded a six-year, $5.6 million contract, Symetrics Industries will manufacture an electronic chassis for naval aircraft called the VME-3U Technique Control Modulator (TCM). Selected over nine competitors, the VME-3U project is one part of a triad of interrelated military aircraft programs currently being conducted by the company. Photonics Seminar Offered to Corridor High Tech Professionals

Professionals in the optics and photonics field will get back to basics at the first annual Agilent Technologies' Photonics Seminar held at the University of Central Florida's School of Optics / CREOL on July 24. Attendees will improve their understanding of high-speed optical networking systems through sessions with industry professionals and tours of the Agilent Dreams Made Real Truck, which houses a variety of state-of-the-art optical test and measurement solutions. USF-UCF Partner In Accelerated Medical Program

Eligible high school graduates admitted to the University of Central Florida's Burnett Honors College and that meet program requirements and academic benchmarks are now guaranteed admission into the University of South Florida's College of Medicine. The seven year program is the first of its kind for the two schools and builds on a seven-year honors medical degree program that began at USF's Honor's College in 1985. Technology Incubator Names New Associate Director

 Backed by years of educational and technology leadership, Carol Ann Dykes has been tapped to lead the Central Florida Technology Incubator as its new associate director. Dykes will be responsible for day- to-day operations, will serve as a liaison between UCF and Incubator clients, and will assist the director and advisory board on strategic issues. Dykes' experience includes more than ten years with the Southern Technology Application Center (STAC). "We are fortunate to have someone with such tremendous knowledge of the technology industry to help lead the Incubator into the future," said Tom O'Neal, executive director of the Incubator. EDC of Florida's Space Coast Conducts Aviation Aerospace Cluster Study

Economic development and workforce professionals now have a clearer picture of the Space Coast's growing aviation and aerospace industry thanks to a study conducted by the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast, Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral and numerous airports and defense-related companies. Of the more than 180 Corridor companies engaged in the aviation and aerospace industry, one in three were found to be located in Brevard County. These Space Coast companies have an economic impact of more than $349.4 million a year and employ nearly 10,000 people. Enterprise Florida Names New Leadership

 Technology and economic development leader Darrell Kelley has been selected as the next president and CEO of Enterprise Florida Inc. (EFI) and will begin serving on August 5. Kelley joins EFI from MILCOM Technologies, an Orlando-based business incubator specializing in the commercialization of defense- related technologies, where he served as chief operating officer. Kelley, who also spent more than two years as president and CEO of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, was a member of EFI's board of directors from 1996 to 1997 and spent nearly 40 years with the telecom giant Sprint, including three years as president of the company's Southern Operations. Polk County Teacher's Given Chance to Experience the World of High Tech

Polk County's first ever "Tech Camp" held on June 4 - 5 gave local math and science teachers first-hand experience in high technology jobs. The two-day camp, hosted by the Corridor's Tech 4 Consortium, focused on science and math behind the semiconductor industry and gave educators teaching aids and an understanding of jobs students might pursue. Conducted in partnership with Lakeland Electric, Agere Systems, UCF, USF, Polk County Community College and Polk County Public Schools - the Camp used classroom presentations as well as activities at no cost to the attendees or school system. Harris Corporation Wins $200 Million U.S. Census Bureau Contract

Census takers will be able to more precisely conduct their research and tabulations, thanks to a project being conducted by Melbourne-based Harris Corporation. Awarded an eight-year, $200 million contract by the U.S. Census Bureau, the MAF/TIGER Accuracy Improvement project includes design of an advanced digital database used to house national geographic census data. An estimated 15 million residences and 60 million businesses will be included in this Master Address File (MAF). Harris will act as the program's prime contractor, applying its image, cartographic, and database processing technologies- as well as its expertise in developing integrated information and production management systems. Fastest Growing Corridor Tech Companies to be Honored at Annual Event

Fifty of the Corridor's fastest growing high tech companies will be honored on September 17 during the 2002 Florida High Tech Corridor Fast 50. Hosted by Deloitte & Touche and featuring simultaneous events at Orlando's Rosen Centre Hotel and Tampa's Marriott Waterside - the annual competition will highlight leading companies based on percentage revenue growth over five years (1997-2001). Also to be recognized are the region's five Rising Stars - a special award for companies in business three or four years and based on percentage revenue growth over 3 years (1999-2001).
