UF
Test Drug Could Cut Orthodontic Treatment Time
University
of Florida (UF) researchers are testing the hormone Relaxin as a biochemical
aid to speed up the straightening of teeth during orthodontic treatment.
Relaxin is
best known as the hormone used to help stretch pelvic ligaments in women before
giving birth, by softening collagen and elastin in tissues.
Researchers
hope to find that using Relaxin in conjunction with braces will speed up
orthodontic treatment and prevent teeth from relapsing to their former
positions after treatment. If the hormone is successful it could cut patients’
time wearing braces in half and eliminate the need for retainers.

USF
Hospital Affiliate Participates in Shingles Vaccine Trial
The James
A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital, an affiliate of the University of South Florida (USF)
Health Sciences Center, participated in a study of an experimental vaccine,
which prevented half of the cases of the painful nerve and skin infection
shingles.
The
vaccine, known as the zoster vaccine, is a more potent form of the virus
administered to children to prevent chickenpox.
The study,
done by the Department of Veterans Affairs in collaboration with the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Merck & Co., Inc., was
completed at 22 sites across the U.S. including the James A. Haley Veteran’s
Hospital, which enrolled 1,200 participants.

University
of Central Florida (UCF) topped its previous $100 million milestone as

This year’s funding increased by 25 percent over the 2003-2004 funding of $83
million.
The College

million, followed by the College of Education with $17.3 million, and the
College of Optics and Photonics at $15 million.
Vice
President for Research M.J. Soileau attributes this success to efforts made by
researchers and university support through matching funds programs and start-up
grants for newly hired professors.

Orlando-based Applied Visual Technology Simulation, Inc. (AVT) has designed a
new simulator application which will better prepare Apache Longbow helicopter
pilots and crews for combat.

Did You Know?
The Florida
High Tech Corridor is made up of two separate bodies – the Corridor Council and
the Core Team.
The
Corridor Council is chaired by the presidents of the University of Central
Florida, the University of South Florida, and the University of Florida and is
made up of representatives of high tech organizations appointed by the
presidents. Council members and the Council’s economic development and
community college partners appoint members of their organizations to serve on
the Core Team.
These Core
Team representatives have contributed tens of thousands of hours since the
Corridor Council was formed. In the past three years alone, their time was
valued at more than $4.1 million, and financial support from the organizations
behind these individuals came to more than $7.3 million cash and in-kind
support for a total of $11.4 million. Their efforts were focused on
implementing a strategic plan built around four key strategies: sponsored
research, workforce development programs, marketing programs, and the
cultivation of technology communities. |
