USF Scientists to Monitor Underwater Terrorist
Activity
Scientists from the University of South Florida’s (USF) Center for
Ocean Technology (COT) will monitor New York City waters for
underwater terrorist activity during the Republican National
Convention from Aug. 30 – Sept. 2. COT scientists will use real-time
video and three-dimensional (3D) sonar along piers, ship hulls and sea
walls to provide constant underwater surveillance.
The system was developed with a grant from the Office of Naval
Research. It offers high-resolution, 3D color images of what it scans
and a geo-referencing system which allows analysts to pinpoint the
location of any object.

Study May Lead to New Ovarian Cancer
Screening
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute’s Rebecca
Sutphen, M.D., authored a three-year study that could lead to a
simple blood test for ovarian cancer. The study showed that
lysophosphatidic acid, a substance that is purified from the pelvic
fluid of women, is present in high levels in women with ovarian
cancer but low in healthy women.
The study was funded by the American Cancer Society and was
published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Bayfront
Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Morton Plant Hospital in
Clearwater, Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, and community doctors
from Bay Area Oncology in Tampa contributed to the study.
