UCF ORBIT Briefs Executives on IT Business Value in Uncertain Economic Times

Helping technology, IT and business executives find ways to increase the value, productivity and financial return for their organizations, the UCF Office of Resources for Business & Information Technology (ORBIT) will present a briefing titled “Achieving & Sustaining IT Business Value in an Uncertain Economy” on Friday, May 9. Space Coast EDC and FHTCC Help Florida Tech “GETSMART”

For the second year in a row, the FHTCC has awarded a $25,000 GETSMART grant to the Space Coast EDC, in partnership with the Florida Institute of Technology, to educate students and teachers about engineering professions. GETSMART – Gateway to Engineering, Technical, Science, Math and Resources for Tomorrow – is a one-week summer program for middle school students created to introduce them to different engineering fields and show their impact on our everyday lives. Administered by Florida Tech engineering faculty, the program is also open to five math and science teachers from Brevard County. This year GETSMART will be held at Stone Middle School and is tentatively scheduled for June 16-20. National Center for Simulation Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

More than 150 executives and community leaders gathered on March 27at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the National Center for Simulation (NCS). Formed in 1993, NCS provides a voice for the emerging modeling and simulation industry, and plays a key role in advancing this industry along the High Tech Corridor and around the country. US Department of Defense Funds UCF Research Instrumentation

University of Central Florida’s defense-related research is getting a boost as the recipient of four Department of Defense (DoD) research instrumentation awards. Resulting from the DoD’s merit competition, UCF is one of 75 academic institutions nationwide—and one of four statewide—receiving awards expected to range from $50,000 to $665,000. Conducted by the research offices of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Missile Defense Agency, the awards are given to meet critical needs of
university researchers to purchase scientific equipment that will assist in conducting DoD-relevant research. These awards will be used to enhance UCF’s research in 2 and 3-D displays; in developing new kinds of glass for optical data storage specialty components and high powered lasers; improving thermal imaging systems; as well as enhancing the University’s nanoscience technology instrumentation. Third Annual Florida High Tech Corridor Directory Now Available

Florida’s High Tech Corridor Council and the Maddux Report recently issued the third annual directory of high tech companies in the Corridor’s 21-county region. Data for the directory is collected on employers and employment in all six high tech sectors: aviation and aerospace; information technology; medical technologies; microelectronics; modeling, simulation and training; and optics and photonics. In addition to company listings and contacts, the publication contains valuable statistics and trends for each industry cluster and the region’s technology community as a whole. The directory also features stories on the region’s venture capital, workforce development, research, and technology incubators. Copies of the publication are

Upcoming Leadership Forum to Address Region’s Positioning

Community leaders will meet to discuss positioning the region for future high-value opportunities on April 22 at the Regional Leadership Forum. Representatives from the Regional Board of Advisors, Central Florida Technology Partnership (CFTP), Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission (EDC), Central Florida Innovation Corporation (CFIC) and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council will update attendees

Region’s Tech Future to be Examined at Town Hall Meeting

On Tuesday April 29, USF President Judy Genshaft and UCF President John Hitt will join a panel of technology leaders from Tampa Bay and Orlando at Tampa Bay Technology Forum’s (TBTF) Tech Future Town Hall Meeting. This event will explore how the region can cultivate its technology community and achieve greater success as a center of technology entrepreneurship and innovation. Discussion topics will
include the role that Florida’s universities will play in the future of Florida’s technology economy; how can the university and business communities can overcome the challenges in their cultural differences and collaborate effectively; and what the region can do to strengthen Florida’s tech companies and promote their success.
