UCF Receives Funding to Help Improve Airport Screening
With a $210,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF) are studying learning techniques to understand how to best train airport screeners to pick out threatening objects as they pass through X-ray machines. The findings, along with the results of similar studies at other universities, will help the FAA and the Transportation Security Administration determine the best procedures to train new screeners.

Embry-Riddle Receives FAA Certification
Daytona-Beach’s Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has received the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) certification of an MD-90 EFD Level-D full-flight simulator. The university plans to use the simulator in its Commercial Airline Pilot Training (CAPT) Program. The device accurately replicates all of the operational ground and flight functions of the MD-90 EFD jet, which allows the FAA to consider hours logged in the simulator equal to time logged in an actual aircraft.

Florida Tech Joins “Million Solar Roofs” Initiative
Florida Tech has installed 500-square-foot electric panels on the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Million Solar Roofs project. The panels will have a monthly output of about 1000 kilowatt-hours of electricity to supplement university power sources. The system’s primary use is educational including teaching and research. It will be used in several courses this semester.

The goal of the Million Solar Roofs initiative is to install one million solar energy systems on U.S. buildings by 2010. The project is intended to increase demand for solar energy products and applications, help minimize greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions and create high tech jobs.
