INSIDE FLORIDA’S HIGH TECH
CORRIDOR |

July2004 |
FHTCC Serves as Example for South Florida
South Florida counties are shifting their economic strategy. Leaders
in the South Florida area are seeking to pool their assets
regionally to ease competition among each other and to better
contend with other regions around the country. The shift will also
provide them with more exposure leading to an increase in potential
business opportunities.
Key South Florida decision makers are modeling their new economic
structure after extremely successful economic partnerships such as
the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, which partners with its
regional economic organizations.
In June, South Florida public and private economic development
groups met to discuss future regional efforts at the 2004 South
Florida Economic Summit. Gov. Jeb Bush, the keynote speaker,
commended the regional partnership of the Florida High Tech Corridor
Council for its ability to work as a team in addressing critical
local issues and completing high-profile projects within the
Corridor. He also singled it out as one of the best examples of a
successful regional partnership.

University of Central Florida, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce,
and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council spoke with attendees about
bio opportunities available in the state.
Conference enrollment exceeded 17,000. There were representatives from
61 countries, 49 U.S. states including the District of Columbia and
Puerto Rico and 10 Canadian provinces.

The University of Central Florida (UCF) and Electronic Arts (EA) are
developing the UCF Interactive Entertainment Academy for video game
software. Experienced software programmers will teach students how
to design, program and test video games.
The new school is largely funded by a $4.2 million state grant. It
will open in fall 2005 and will likely be located in downtown
Orlando. The degree program will produce about 100 highly skilled
video game engineers per year.

Professor Discovers Similarity between
Earth and Jupiter
University of South Florida (USF) professor Dr. Boris Galperin
recently presented results of a study to a Columbia University
conference. The study, conducted by Galperin and his colleagues at
the USF College of Marine Science, links the currents of Earth’s
oceans and the alternating bands of current on Jupiter by a
phenomenon called zonal jets. Both sets of these jets are the result
of an underlying turbulent flow regime common in nature.
Dr. Galperin’s findings were published in “Geophysical Research
Letters.”

Pinellas to Launch New
Business Incubator
This fall, Pinellas County will launch a new business incubator, which
will be housed in the newly renovated STAR Technology Enterprise
Center. The center is located on the campus of the Young-Rainey STAR
Center business park. The County has donated 20,000 square feet for
office and manufacturing space.
The incubator’s committee hopes to recruit technology and
manufacturing businesses to reside in the new space. They plan on
providing benefits to the companies such as reduced rent and business
counseling from local experts.

techCAMP Introduces Educators to Simulation
Industry More than 20 Manatee and Sarasota County educators attended the June
Modeling, Simulation, & Training (MS&T) techCAMP held by techPATH—an
initiative of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.
Middle and high school math teachers, science teachers and
counselors learned about multiple types of simulation including
human patient simulators. They received an overview of the
simulation industry, simulation technology (sim tech) jobs and
requirements to assist them in preparing their students for a
successful future in the MS&T industry.
The workshop was held at the Center for Innovation and Technology at
Manatee Community College (MCC) Lakewood Ranch and included a tour
of Manatee Technical Institute.

Professor’s Research
to Impact Pharmaceutical Production
University of South Florida (USF) Department of Chemistry Chair, Dr.
Mike Zaworotko has discovered new functions of active pharmaceutical
ingredients (API’s) through his work in crystal engineering. These
findings have led to further research and a licensing agreement with
TransForm Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Zaworotko’s research will impact the formulation of drugs, which
is the key to patenting pharmaceuticals and making them work
effectively. The co-crystals discovered also broaden the number of
“forms” that can be made for a pharmaceutical.

Genome Exhibit Explains
DNA Research Capabilities
The Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa is hosting a new exhibit
that explains scientific possibilities of human DNA. The exhibit
titled “Genome: The Secret of How Life Works,” explores how the
secret codes within human genes make us who we are.
Scientists hope that the event will create a better understanding of
human gene capabilities. Researchers are attempting to use DNA
research to alter and even conquer hereditary diseases. They are
also using this knowledge to develop the technology to replace
defective genes through gene therapy. The fundamental causes of
illness and thus the drugs to treat them would dramatically be
altered.
Organizers expect more that five million people to attend the
exhibit as it tours 15 cities over the next five years.

Did You
Know?
Florida is actually the convergence point of the entire nation’s
networks of fiber optic lines. These lines allow voice and data
transmission and the undersea telecommunications links to connect
North America with countries all over the world. Additionally, two
of the country’s Network Access Points are based in Florida, which
handle great Internet traffic within the U.S. and between the U.S.
and other countries.
